Tailwind Studios Brings Whitehorse Airport to Microsoft Flight Simulator

Tailwind Studios has released a detailed recreation of Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. The new scenery brings one of northern Canada’s most important aviation gateways to life with custom buildings, detailed ground textures, animated features and optimized performance.

A Gateway to Canada’s North

Located in Whitehorse, Yukon, Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport—identified by the ICAO code CYXY—connects southern Canada with remote communities across the North.

The airport accommodates scheduled passenger service alongside charter, cargo, general aviation and regional operations. Its location also makes it an appealing starting point for virtual pilots planning flights across the Yukon, into Alaska or south toward Canada’s larger population centers.

Tailwind Studios’ new scenery replaces the simulator’s default rendition with a more detailed airport environment designed to capture both the airfield and its surrounding landscape.

Tailwind Studios Recreates CYXY in Detail

The airport’s buildings, hangars and facilities have been custom modeled, while high-resolution 4K physically based rendering materials provide more realistic surfaces, reflections and weathering.

Handcrafted ground textures cover the airport’s aprons and other operating areas. Taxiway markings, signs and the overall airport layout have also been reproduced to provide pilots with a more recognizable experience while navigating CYXY.

A custom animated jetway adds movement to the terminal environment, while static aircraft, airport clutter and ground-service equipment help make the airfield appear active between arrivals and departures.

Tailwind Studios has also modeled landside and airside surroundings, along with nearby landmarks intended to improve the airport’s integration with the wider Whitehorse environment.

Night Operations and Performance

Custom night lighting has been installed throughout the scenery, giving pilots another option for experiencing Whitehorse during evening arrivals, departures and long northern winter nights.

Despite the level of detail, Tailwind Studios says the scenery includes optimized models and level-of-detail configurations intended to provide smooth performance on a range of systems.

The complete feature list includes:

  1. A detailed recreation of Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport
  2. Custom airport buildings, hangars and facilities
  3. High-resolution 4K PBR materials
  4. Handcrafted ground textures and apron details
