The new widebody brings a three-class cabin, improved efficiency and a distinctly Dutch identity. Its name, The Night Watch, pays tribute to Rembrandt’s famous painting—bringing a little artistic inspiration to the departure board.
Toronto Will Be the First Destination
According to KLM, the aircraft is expected to begin passenger operations in the coming weeks, with Toronto selected as its first destination.
The airline also identifies Montreal, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Zanzibar among the destinations that will follow.
For aviation enthusiasts, the delivery provides a new aircraft to watch at Schiphol. For flight-simulation pilots, those destinations offer inspiration for a fresh series of KLM long-haul rotations.
Three Cabins and 331 Passenger Seats
Airbus lists KLM’s A350-900 with 331 seats across three cabins:
- 34 Business Class suites with direct aisle access
- 26 Premium Comfort seats
- 271 Economy Class seats
The aircraft features Airbus’s Airspace cabin, including larger baggage capacity, ambient lighting and high-speed satellite connectivity.
Those details matter on flights where passengers spend much of the day—or night—on board. A new aircraft may attract attention for its exterior, but the cabin is where travelers will experience the change.
Efficiency Drives the Fleet Renewal
Airbus attributes the A350’s efficiency to its lightweight construction, aerodynamics and Rolls-Royce engines. The manufacturer says the aircraft offers approximately 25 percent lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions than previous-generation competing aircraft.
That comparison describes an advantage over older aircraft, rather than a guaranteed reduction for every flight or across KLM’s entire operation.
For an airline renewing its long-haul fleet, efficiency and passenger comfort are closely connected priorities: the aircraft must serve its network while providing an attractive experience on board.
Dutch Masterpieces Inspire the Names
KLM has chosen well-known Dutch artworks as the naming theme for its A350 fleet. Following The Night Watch, the second aircraft will carry the name Girl with a Pearl Earring.
The arrival forms part of KLM’s €7 billion fleet renewal program, which also includes A321neos, KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer E2 aircraft, Boeing 787s and A350F freighters.
Delivery also precedes the first passenger flight. KLM’s announcement notes that EASA had approved the World Business Class seat test results, allowing the seat certification process to begin.
A New Chapter for A350 Fans
The passenger aircraft’s arrival adds another development to follow alongside the cargo program covered in Sky Blue Radio’s report on the Airbus A350F’s maiden flight.
Virtual pilots can also revisit our coverage of iniBuilds’ A350 updates for Microsoft Flight Simulator before planning their own Amsterdam departure.
Further details are available in KLM’s official arrival announcement and Airbus’s delivery announcement.
For now, KLM’s first A350 has reached its new home. Toronto is next on the itinerary—and virtual pilots can start preparing the flight plan.
