A New Home for Flight-Sim Freeware
Freeware has been one of the foundations of flight simulation for decades. Community developers regularly produce aircraft, airports, liveries, utilities and enhancements that can completely transform a simulator without charging pilots for the download.
Hangar Addons is entering that space with an ambitious promise: keep the platform free and remove unnecessary obstacles between users and their downloads.
The new website supports Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and X-Plane. Its growing library can be searched by simulator and content category, helping users locate aircraft, scenery, liveries and utilities.
Hangar Addons also includes community forums, shared flight plans and an evolving flight-planning system. Founder Michael Geise says the long-term goal is to create something broader than another file library by bringing downloads, planning tools and community features together.
At the time of publication, the website displayed more than 130 available add-ons. That number is likely to change quickly as additional developers and users begin contributing.
No Premium Tier or Download Countdown
The central promise behind Hangar Addons is summarized on its official website as “Free means free.”
According to the platform’s official About page, users will not be required to watch an advertisement before downloading a file. The platform also says it will not limit download speeds to encourage people to purchase a faster membership.
There is currently no paid membership tier, and Geise says the platform does not intend to introduce one.
Reasonable advertising could eventually be added to help offset infrastructure costs. However, Hangar Addons says any future advertisements would be placed around the website rather than blocking downloads with pop-ups, mandatory videos or countdown timers.
That approach directly addresses frustrations some flight simmers have expressed about advertisements, throttled downloads and premium memberships on other community-hosting platforms.
However, maintaining a growing freeware library requires considerable storage, bandwidth and technical support. The real test will be whether Hangar Addons can preserve its current philosophy as traffic and hosting demands increase.
Creators Retain Control of Their Work
Hangar Addons is also placing significant emphasis on developer ownership and authorization.
Geise says add-ons will only be hosted when the creator has specifically authorized the platform to distribute them. Developers retain ownership of their work and receive credit, attribution and links to their preferred website, Discord server or profile.
Creators can also ask for their content to be removed at any time.
Developers who prefer to host files on their own servers do not have to surrender control of the download. Hangar Addons can instead list the project and direct users to the creator’s existing download location.
In his open invitation to flight-sim creators, Geise said the objective is to build the platform alongside developers rather than launch an empty website and wait for content to arrive.
That invitation has also generated questions about operating costs and long-term sustainability. Geise says he is currently covering the infrastructure costs himself using a privately operated micro data center with an enterprise fiber connection.
He brings previous experience from operating NFSCars, a major Need for Speed modding community that hosted thousands of community-created vehicles and tools.
Got Friends Joins the Platform
Hangar Addons has already gained support from Got Friends, one of the better-known developers in the Microsoft Flight Simulator freeware community.
Got Friends has placed three projects on the platform:
- Got Friends Legacy Collection
- Fokker Dr.1
- Discus-2c Standard
The developer described the move as an opportunity to support a new community-driven platform rather than simply wishing it success from the sidelines.
Got Friends also emphasized that Hangar Addons is still in its earliest stages. Its library, features and policies will likely evolve as the platform attracts more users and receives feedback from creators.
The developer’s participation gives the new website a recognizable name at launch and could encourage other freeware creators to test the service.
More Than a Download Library
Beyond hosting add-ons, Hangar Addons provides real-world flight plans built around published airways and navigation facilities. Pilots can browse available routes, review estimated flight information and use the developing planner to prepare flights.
The website also offers forums where members can request help, share information and discuss add-ons.
Bringing these features together could help Hangar Addons distinguish itself from websites focused almost entirely on downloads. Whether those community and planning tools can attract a regular audience remains to be seen, but the platform already has a clearer identity than a basic file repository.

A Promising Start With Plenty to Prove
Hangar Addons is arriving with an appealing message for pilots and developers: unrestricted access for users and meaningful control for creators.
Its promises of no premium tier, no download timers and no artificial speed restrictions should attract attention. Support from Got Friends provides an early vote of confidence, while Geise’s previous experience operating a large modding community gives the project a stronger foundation than many newly launched websites.
Still, building a successful download platform requires more than an attractive policy statement. Hangar Addons will need to expand its catalog, maintain reliable hosting, moderate uploaded content and demonstrate that its funding model remains sustainable as usage grows.
For now, the platform gives flight simmers another place to discover freeware—and gives creators another option for sharing their work.
